Your Eye Exam Journey at Prairie Eye Care Edmonton: What to Expect from Start to Finish

PECE May2025 Your eye exam journeyAt Prairie Eye Care Edmonton, we believe your first visit should be smooth, welcoming, and informative. Whether you’re a new patient or bringing your child in for the first time, here’s what to expect during your comprehensive eye exam with us.

Step 1: Intake & Insurance

Upon arrival, you’ll fill out a simple intake form with your personal and medical history. We’ll also collect your insurance information, confirm your coverage, and make sure everything is ready to go before your exam begins.

Step 2: Pre-Testing

Next, we begin your pre-testing with state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment:

  • Autorefractor: Estimates your vision prescription.
  • Optomap Imaging: Captures detailed scans of your retina.
  • iCare Tonometer: Measures eye pressure to screen for glaucoma and other eye diseases.

These tests give our optometrists a complete picture of your eye health before they even start the exam.

Step 3: Eye Exam with the Doctor

After pre-testing, you’ll meet with your optometrist. Exams typically take:

  • 20–30 minutes for adults
  • 15–20 minutes for children

During the exam, we’ll assess your vision, eye coordination, and eye health—and answer any questions you have.

Step 4: Prescriptions & Eyewear Options

Once your exam is complete, we’ll guide you to Judy, our optical lab tech, who can:

  • Go over lens options and help you select stylish frames
  • Provide your prescription if you prefer to shop elsewhere

Expect a 2–2.5-week turnaround for glasses and 1–1.5 weeks for contact lenses. Ordering contacts? You’ll leave with a trial pair and return for a comfort and vision check before placing your order. Bonus: all contacts can be shipped directly to your home or office.

Convenient. Friendly. Thorough.

Whether you’re taking time off work or fitting your appointment between errands, your visit will typically last 30–40 minutes. We’re located just south of West Edmonton Mall in the plaza with Starbucks and Sorrentino’s—easy to find and fully wheelchair accessible.
